QMS Printing Notes for Windows Applications Below are hints for printing from specific Windows applications on both QMS-PS laser printers and QMS ColorScript thermal-transfer printers. Instructions are for both types of printers unless otherwise indicated. If you have a new printer, before using these application notes, you should unpack and set up the printer and establish communication between the printer and the host computer. See the printer and computer documentation for instructions. Configuring the Printer at the Control Panel Some QMS printers can be configured through their control panels. These printers have LCD message windows that display configuration menu options, and configuration (arrow) keys that allow you to navigate the configuration menu. If your printer can be configured from its control panel, you can access many printer functions through it. The PS Executive Series Utilities The PS Executive Series Utilities software shipped with your printer allows you to access printer features easily from your host computer. Included are utilities for communication setup, printer hard-disk management, font downloading, and other routine functions. If you have not installed this software, we strongly recommend that you do so now (but it is not required for printer use). The utilities documentation explains how to use and install the software. If your printer is configurable from its control panel (has an LCD message window and configuration keys as described in þConfiguring the Printer at the Control Panel,þ above), you can perform some PS Executive functions through it. NOTE: PS Executive Series Utilities runs as a DOS application under Windows. About Printer Languages Most QMS printers support either HP-GL (Hewlett-Packard Graphics Language) or HP PCL (Hewlett-Packard Printer Control Language) or both. Check your printer or emulation documentation to find out exactly which plotters, LaserJet printers, and PCL levels your printer supports, and how to use them. Generally, however, PostScript is the language of choice for Windows, so make sure your printer is in ESP (Emulation Sensing Processor) mode (if it supports ESP technology) or in PostScript mode. ESP technology allows the printer to select the appropriate printer language (from those installed on the printer) by analyzing file data sent from most popular, commercially available applications. You can set the printer mode through the PS Executive Series Utilities that came with your printer, or through the printer's control panel (if your printer has an LCD message window and configuration keys). The QMS PostScript Driver for Windows 3.0 A printer driver file converts generic printer commands from an application into printer-specific commands. You must have a driver designed for your type of printer to print from your application. Included in PS Executive Series Utilities package is a QMS PostScript driver for Windows 3.0. It replaces and expands the capabilities of the Microsoft PostScript printer driver that ships with Windows. If your version of PS Executive Series Utilities does not contain this driver, you can obtain it through the QMS Bulletin Board (see þQMS Customer Supportþ at the end of this document) or by calling (800) 523-2696. It supports the following printers: QMS-PS 410, QMS-PS 800, QMS-PS 800+, QMS-PS 815/815 MR, QMS-PS 820, QMS-PS 820 turbo, QMS-PS 825/825 MR, QMS ColorScript 100 Model 10/10p, QMS ColorScript 100 Model 30/30si, QMS-PS 1500, QMS-PS 1700, QMS-PS 2000, QMS-PS 2200, QMS-PS 2210, QMS QMS-PS 2220, QMS ImageServer X320, QMS-PS 430J, QMS-PS 460J. NOTE: This driver works with Windows 3.1, but does not support TrueType fonts. To use your TrueType fonts, use the Microsoft driver supplied with Windows 3.1. See þWPD Files,þ below, for more information about drivers for QMS printers. To obtain the QMS PostScript driver for Windows 3.1, contact QMS Customer Technical Support. (See þQMS Customer Support,þ below.) Installing the QMS PostScript Driver for Windows 3.0 To set up most PC applications running in a Windows 3.0 environment and install the QMS PostScript driver, use the following procedure: 1. From the Windows Program Manager, double-click the Control Panel icon (located in the Main group). 2. In the Control Panel window, double-click the Printers icon to open it. Check the Installed Printers menu to see if you already have a PostScript driver loaded. If not, skip to step 3. If you do have a PostScript driver already loaded, follow these instructions to remove it: a.Highlight the PostScript driver and click Configure. b.Select Remove and then select Yes when asked if you want to remove the printer driver. 3. In the Printers dialog box, click the Add Printer button. 4. The dialog box expands to display the List of Printers. Scroll to the bottom of the list and select Unlisted Printer. 5. Click the Install button. 6. Under Directories in the Add Unlisted Printer window, select the drive where you have inserted the disk containing the printer driver. Then, under the Driver Files menu, select PSCRIPT.DRV, then click OK. 7. The PostScript (QMS) driver appears in the Installed Printers box. Highlight it and click the Configure button in the Printers dialog box. 8. In the Printers-Configure dialog box, click the desired host port in the Ports list. Set print options by clicking Setup. In the PostScript printer dialog box, choose your printer type, paper source, paper output tray, and paper size from the appropriate list. Other available selections are paper orientation, scaling, duplexing, and number of copies. 9. After setting up the printer, verify the correct driver version. To do this, click the About button. Return to the Printers dialog box by clicking OK through all screens. 10.Click the Active button in the status box. Double-click PostScript (QMS) in the Printers dialog box. This makes the QMS printer the default printer. 11.Repeat steps 3 through 10 to install the QMS driver for other ports you print to. 12.Click OK to exit the Printers dialog box. 13.When you exit Windows, be sure to save the changes. (Make sure there is an x in the Save Changes box.) NOTE: Some applications, such as Ventura Publisher and Micrografx Designer, have special requirements for drivers. Make note of the following information when installing a driver for these applications. Ventura Publisher The driver name must be the same as the released Microsoft PSCRIPT.DRV driver. Ventura Publisher determines whether the printer is a PostScript device by looking at the name, PSCRIPT. Therefore, you are able to use only the QMS or Microsoft driver. Micrografx Designer Certain Micrografx Designer files do not print properly with either the QMS PostScript driver or the Microsoft PostScript driver. If you encounter problems, use the Micrografx driver supplied with Designer. WPD Files NOTE: These WPD files work with Windows 3.1 as well as with Windows 3.0. WPD files for QMS printers are included in the \WPDS\QMS subdirectory on the Windows driver disk so that support for a QMS printer can be added to any Windows 3.0 PostScript driver. This might be helpful if you are required to use some other driver instead of the QMS driver, which already supports all QMS printers. (It's better to use the QMS driver if you can, though.) The WPD (Windows Printer Driver) files on the Windows drivers disk are for QMS printers and other PostScript printers. Most available PostScript drivers for Windows were based on the original Microsoft driver, which allows support for additional printers to be added by installing WPD files. WPD files for non-QMS printers are included in the \WPDS\OTHERS subdirectory so that support for a non-QMS printer can be added to the QMS driver, which supports only QMS printers. This might be helpful if you need to print to both a QMS and a non-QMS printer. View or print the README.TXT file in the \WPDS\QMS or \WPDS\OTHERS subdirectory for complete WPD installation and removal instructions. Using Resident Printer Typefaces If your Windows PostScript driver does not support a printer-resident typeface, you will not be able to print that typeface. The QMS Windows driver supports QMS printer resident typefaces, but if you choose to use some other driver, some resident typefaces might not be supported (for example, Adobe Garamond, Helvetica Narrow, and Helvetica Condensed). To be able to use all resident typefaces with a non-QMS driver, install the appropriate PFM (Printer Font Metrics) files from the \WPDS\QMS\PFM subdirectory on the Windows driver disk. For instructions, see the README.TXT file in the \WPDS\QMS subdirectory of that disk. Screen Fonts Although matching screen fonts for resident typefaces are not required to print, they let you see on the screen how the typefaces will look when printed. These screen fonts are supplied by the application vendor. Screen fonts for resident printer fonts can be acquired by calling QMS at (800) 523-2696. Use the QMS PostScript driver for full access to printer resident fonts and screen fonts. Verifying the Driver is Active Always make sure that the PostScript driver is active in the application you are working with before trying to print from that application. To check whether or not the PostScript driver is active in most Windows applications, simply go to the File menu in that application and click either Printer Setup or Target Printer. The driver appears if it is active. To check for an active driver in CorelDRAW, Adobe Illustrator, or Micrografx Designer, use the following procedures: CorelDRAW To work with CorelDRAW, use the following procedure: 1. In the File menu, choose Control Panel. 2. Follow steps 7 through 12 in "Installing the QMS PostScript Driver for Windows," above. 3. Close the Control Panel dialog box. Adobe Illustrator To work with Adobe Illustrator, use the following procedure: 1. In the File menu, choose Page Setup. 2. The Printer dialog box appears. Select the appropriate printer driver. 3. Click OK. Micrografx Designer 3.0 Micrografx Designer ships with its own PostScript driver that supports QMS PostScript printers. In most cases, this driver should be used instead of the QMS driver. To work with Micrografx Designer 3.0, use the following procedure: 1. From the File menu, choose Change Printer. 2. Click PostScript (Micrografx) on the appropriate printer port. 3. Click Printer. 4. Click the appropriate printer. 5. Click OK. 6. Select the appropriate Paper Source, Paper Size, and Paper Orientation. 7. Select Standard PostScript Format. 8. Click OK. Micrografx Designer 2.0 Use the following procedure to work with Micrografx Designer 2.0: 1. From the file menu, choose Change Printer. 2. In the Select Printer dialog box, highlight the PostScript (Micrografx) driver. 3. Click OK. A PostScript:printer dialog box appears. 4. From the Printer menu choose Select. 5. In the PostScript Printers dialog box highlight the appropriate QMS printer and click OK. 6. Select the appropriate Paper Source, Paper Size, Orientation, Copies, and Scaling. 7. Make sure an X appears in the Save box. 8. Click OK. NOTE: This driver does not support all QMS printers. QMS Customer Support You have several sources of help, depending on the type of help you need: 1. Call your QMS printer vendor. Your local vendor (the one from whom you bought the printer) is best equipped to help you. The vendor has specially trained service technicians available to answer questions, and the equipment to analyze your problems. 2. Call your application vendor. Often, þprintingþ problems have more to do with the application than with the printer. 3. Use the QMS bulletin board at (205) 633-3632, or CompuServe, if you have access to a modem. The bulletin board operates at 1200/2400 baud, 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit. For general questions that do not require an immediate response, simply leave your questions on e-mail addressed to the Sysop. (Turn-around time for answers on the board is typically one business day). The bulletin board is not designed to replace the Customer Technical Support offered by QMS. If you use CompuServe, type GO DTPVEN to enter the DTP forum. QMS is section 3 of that forum. CompuServe is not staffed by technical support people, but the QMS library section contains printer drivers, utilities, and announcement files. 4. Call QMS Customer Technical Support We are available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Central Standard Time, at (205) 633-4500. You can also fax questions to us at (205) 633-3716. Please indicate whether you would like a faxed or a phoned reply. For support outside the U.S., contact your nearest vendor or QMS branch listed in your printer documentation.
