Using QMS-PS Printers with ESP on a Banyan VINES Network Using a QMS-PS 410, 8x5, 8x5MR or 2000 printer with ESP on a Banyan VINES network will require custom entries into the VINES Print Services Management program. The speed at which spooled network jobs are sent to the QMS-PS printer with ESP can cause the printer to remain in a non-PostScript mode (HP-PCL) while printing PostScript files. Inserting prefix data for each print job will lessen the possibility of this occurring. The command sequence for the PS 410/8x5/8x5MR's parallel port is \E\x7f0\x04statusdict begin 1 200 setemulation\x04 The command string format for the PS 410/8x5/8x5MR's serial port is \E\x7f0\x04statusdict begin 0 200 setemulation\x04 The command sequence for the PS 2000's parallel port is \E\x7f0%!\x0dstatusdict begin 1 200 setemulation\x04 The command string format for the PS 2000's serial port is \E\x7f0%!\x0dstatusdict begin 0 200 setemulation\x04 where \E = Escape \x7f = delete \x04 = ^d \x0d = These are the steps for inserting this command: 1. After logging into the VINES network, run the program MANAGE. When the menu is displayed, choose option 1 Services. This will display a screen of all services running on the network. (A shortcut to this screen is to run the program MSERVICE.) 2. If the printer is included in the list of services, choose 'SELECT from list below', highlight the printer service, and press enter. (If the printer is not listed, choose 'ADD a server-based service' and follow the instructions for adding a new service until the 'Configure print service screen' is displayed, then skip to Step 4 for configuration information.) 3. After selecting the print service, choose 'CONTROL the service,' press enter, choose 'CONFIGURE service' and press enter. 4. The 'Configure print service' screen is displayed. This is where you will add the command strings for initializing the printer. The fields that are important to QMS-PS printers with ESP are the Banner page prefix and suffix, the Output prefix and suffix, and the Banner page enabled. If Banner pages are enabled, the banner page prefix should match the corresponding sequence for the appropriate printer and printer port listed above and the banner page suffix should be blank. The output prefix should also match the corresponding sequence for the appropriate printer and printer port listed above. The output suffix field should also be blank. These fields are case sensitive so the data should be entered exactly as it is typed above. More information on these fields can be found in the VINES Administrator's Reference, Chapter 8. 5. Press to save these changes, STOP [the] service, then START [the] service on the 'Control A Service' screen, then press until you are returned to DOS. One other change that may need to be made is to the End Spooling Delay time count. Under the program SETPRINT, choose the appropriate printer, highlight Modify Printer Setup, and change the End Spooling Delay to five seconds or less. For applications that do not end a spooled print job, this will shorten the time delay for a spooled job to be sent to the printer. More information on this may be found in the VINES User's Guide, Chapter 6. Once these changes are made, there should be no problem with printing to a QMS-PS printer with ESP on a Banyan VINES network.
